If you do an internet research about Fattoria Montefiridolfi you’ll find almost nothing… A facebook page and nothing else. So this wine producer seems to be quite unknow and not so social for sure! Probably the owner is focused on the real countryside life and on the quality of his wine, exactly as it should be.
The wine I am going to review here, Canaiolo IGT “Uva Donna”, Organic, is a really, really, good wine. It’s made with Canaiolo nero grapes, also called uva donna (so the name of the wine). This type of grape is very important in the Tuscan wine tradition because it has always been one of the three grapes of the classic and famous Chianti blend: sangiovese, canaiolo and colorino (and a little percentage of white grapes such as malavasia or trebbiano). Sangiovese grape gives the structure of the wine, colorino grapes enhance the colour and canaiolo balances the roughness of sangiovese.
It’s quite uncommon to find a 100% canaiolo wine and the one made by Fattoria di Montefiridolfi it’s truly amazing.
I opened this bottle at home, during a sunday family lunch and it really was the perfect wine for that moment. Compact ruby red colour, the nose is a plunge into a red berries jam. The flavour is roundish but not as a merlot, this wine has an elegant roundedness well combined with a discreet acidity.
Long-lasting flavour, pleasant and harmonious. A simple wine that goes straight to your heart and gives a real picture of Tuscany.
The bottle I had was a 2013 opened in 2018 and the wine was mature, probably at the best of its evolution.
The food pairing was delicious: home-made tagliette with ragu, made by my mother.
“Uva Donna” is a wine a recommend to share with your loved ones to make a toast to love and life.
